What Is An Endometrium & Endometrial Receptivity?

The endometrium is the tissue that lines the uterus, and it thickens after the menstrual cycle in preparation for an embryo to implant. In fact, during menstruation, it is the endometrium that sheds itself when an egg is not fertilized or an embryo does not implant.

Endometrial Receptivity is the stage during which the endometrium is prepared for the embryo’s implantation; this stage happens during a restricted period known as the “Implantation window.”

What Is ERA Test?

ERA is an abbreviation for Endometrial Receptivity Array or Endometrial Receptivity Analysis. It is a genetic examination that involves the analysis of a woman’s endometrial tissue. (The uterine lining). A small sample of the tissue is collected and is examined if her endometrial lining is appropriately matured enough to accommodate an implanting embryo.

Why ERA Test Is Important?

A typical menstrual cycle lasts 28 to 30 days. The 19th to 23rd day is a specific period called the “implantation window”. The ovaries release progesterone during this time, thickening the uterine lining, making it more suitable for the embryo’s implantation.                                            

An ultrasound is enough to examine your endometrium. While this is useful for determining how thick or thin your lining is, the ERA test can provide extra information on your endometrium’s surroundings and quality. When it comes to IVF, this information can be really useful.

 Endometrial receptivity is determined by 248 genes that are tested by ERA. This assists in determining the ideal time for implantation. It’s crucial to keep in mind that your window may be different from someone else’s. Having this additional information might help your doctor tailor your care and IVF protocol to your specific needs. This means that your embryo transfer will be timed to coincide with when your endometrial receptivity is at its best for implantation.

How Is ERA Performed?

ERA is usually performed during the implantation window period. The test begins with the collection of a small sample of your endometrium. This is done using a catheter. A catheter is inserted into the uterine cavity, through the cervix. A small plunger in the catheter creates suction to get a tiny sample of the uterine tissues. This process is called an endo-material biopsy.

 When endometrial cells are responsive, their genetic material takes on a distinct appearance. To categorize a sample as receptive or unreceptive, an advanced computer algorithm is used by using genetic sequencing.
